How to Charge More Building Chatbots

Last Updated: June 1, 2018By Tags:

A Bot Academy student raised a question that worried many community members: Why would businesses pay premium prices for chatbot services when cheaper alternatives exist? The answer comes down to three strategies that separate trusted advisors from order-takers.

The pricing anxiety is universal

This same question appears across every service business — website design ($4,999 vs. $49 templates), branding ($1,999 vs. $5 Fiverr), content creation ($250/article vs. unpaid interns). The freelancers who charge 10-50x more aren’t doing 10-50x more work. They’re positioned differently.

Strategy 1: Become a Trusted Advisor

Clients want to hire people they can trust to solve their problem. The distinction:

Chatbot Creator: Builds exactly what clients request.
Trusted Advisor: Listens deeply, then recommends more effective solutions — sometimes reducing project scope.

Additional differences: provide weekly analytical reports, proactively share industry news and competitive examples, maintain ongoing relationships beyond contract completion. When clients trust your judgment completely, price becomes secondary to results.

Strategy 2: Choose Your Clients Wisely

Price-focused inquiries signal poor fit. When prospects immediately ask “How much do you charge?” before understanding value, they become difficult clients seeking cost reduction rather than results. Strong clients ask about outcomes first.

Also: pick clients who can actually afford your services. The ROI calculation matters — increasing sales from $10,000 to $25,000 justifies a $2,500 investment. Increasing sales from $2,500 to $5,000 doesn’t. Work with businesses where your work creates disproportionate value.

Strategy 3: Deliver Immense Value

Define success metrics in initial meetings: revenue increase, retention improvement, or lead generation. Align all efforts toward those metrics. When you generate $10,000 in verifiable value while charging $5,000, clients view this as exceptional ROI and hire you repeatedly.

One Bot Academy student’s strategies generated $200,000 in pre-sales for a client’s product launch. That student has no problem charging premium rates.
